Prime Minister Narendra Modi has planted a sapling of the Parijat tree in the Ram Mandir temple complex ahead ceremony of laying the foundation stone of temple.
The Parijat Tree (Coral Jasmine Tree) is believed to be Kalpa Vriksh/Kalpa Taru (wish-granting tree), one of the Ratnas (jewels) that emerged from the Krishrasagara (cosmic ocean) during the Samudra Manthan in the Satyuga. The Samudra Manthan took place between the Devas and the Asuras to obtain the Amrit or the Divine nectar. However, several other items emerged from the ocean bed. The Kalpa Taru was one of them.
Indra, the king of the Devas, took it to his abode, Indraloka (Heaven), planted in his garden known as Nandana Vana and gifted it to his wife, Indrani. This tree is also known as the tree of the Universe. The flowers are referred to as Harsingar (Jewels of the Gods).
It is believed that Lord Krishna brought the tree from Indraloka to his kingdom in Dwarka for his wives Rukmini and Satyabhama.
The Parijat is mention in the Puranas and other sacred texts. These flowers bloom at night and falls on the ground by themselves. Therefore, the Parijat is the only flower that can be offered to the deities after picking them from the ground.
According to other legend, Arjun, the son of Indra, brought the Parijat tree from heaven for his mother Kunti to help her perform Shiva Puja.
Therefore, According to the ancient beliefs, Parijat tree was not born out of the Earth. So, This significance of parijat tree and its flowers is the reason behind the plantation of the tree in the Ram Janmabhoomi Temple complex.
